New Logistics Center Expected To Bring 150 New Jobs To Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A logistics center for a company serving auto equipment manufacturers is coming to Detroit's east side — bringing 150 new jobs.

Mayor Mike Duggan and Ambassador Bridge vice chair Matthew Moroun said Tuesday the jobs will be created with the opening of the 500,000-square-foot Linc facility at the Interstate-94 Industrial Park.

"These jobs have benefits: dental, medical, 401k," said City Councilman Scott Benson. "These are good jobs coming to the citizens of Detroit, and we wanna dispel the myth that Detroiters are not ready to work and not willing to work."

At least 51 percent of the jobs will be filled by city residents. Half the construction workers hired for the project also are expected to be from Detroit. Work on the facility is scheduled to be completed in 2016.

"...This is the way we're going to rebuild the city," Duggan said.

Linc is part of Universal Truckload Services, a firm owned by Manuel (Matty) Moroun and his family. Manuel "Matty" Moroun also owns the Ambassador Bridge which connects Detroit with Windsor, Ontario, in Canada.

"This is the fun stuff," said Matthew Moroun, who was also on hand for Tuesday's announcement. "My family, my company, our business  — we've made a number of key commitments to the city, and hiring 150 workers in the development of this 5,000 square-foot logistics facility...this is really fun."

Employment fairs will be held to fill the job openings. The next one is Aug. 25 at the Considine Center on Woodward Ave.
