Former Detroit Lions QB Erik Kramer Hospitalized After Apparent Suicide Attempt

Former Detroit Lions quarterback Erik Kramer is hospitalized following what appears to be a suicide attempt.

According to reports, Los Angeles-area police found 50-year-old Kramer in a hotel Tuesday night with what was described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Kramer played for 10 years in the NFL, with Atlanta, Chicago, San Diego and Detroit -- leading the Lions to the NFC Championship game in 1991.

Kramer's ex-wife, Marshawn, told NBC News that Kramer "suffered depression since he was with the Bears." She believes Kramer's time in the NFL played a role in his attempt to take his life.

"I can promise you he is not the same man I married," she said. "I know Erik and I would still be together if not for his football injury. ... This is a brain injury."

The NFL has not yet commented on the incident, which remains under investigation.

Kramer's son notably died of a heroin overdose in 2011 when he was just 18-years-old.
