Ex-Tigers Pitcher Denny McLain And Lawyer Ordered To Pay $7,000

HOWELL (WWJ/AP) - Ex-Detroit Tigers pitcher Denny McLain and his attorney have been ordered to pay slightly more than $7,000 in attorney fees in a breach-of-contract case.

Judge Theresa Brennan on Thursday said lawyer Barry Powers "was trying to intimidate and harass" Joe Dobson, who sued McLain for $1,910.

Powers tells the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell that Brennan holds a grudge against him for earlier asking her to recuse herself from the case.

"I run into this judge and stand my ground, and she wasn't having it," Powers said. "This building is for the people. It's not for judges to lay down what she wants. She's a public servant."

A jury in July ruled against McLain. Dobson initially sued in a Livingston County court, saying McLain owed him for unpaid wages for a sales job. McLain countersued seeking more than $25,000.

McLain won the 1968 American League Most Valuable Player and Cy Young awards after winning 31 games and leading Detroit to the World Series.
