ESPN: Detroit Teams Have Nation's 8th Best Sports Uniforms

By Dan Jenkins

Here in Detroit, we know just how good our sports teams look, but now they're getting some national love.

ESPN ranked 20 U.S. cities (plus Toronto) based on how good their sports uniforms look, and added bonus points if the city has some famous sports landmarks.

Detroit came in at No. 8 on the list, with the bright spots being the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings jerseys along with Joe Louis' Fist that sits downtown. However, author Paul Lukas takes off points merely for the existence of the Detroit Lions.

The black piping on the Lions' jerseys doesn't sit well with a lot of people, so Lukas gives the style a 3/10. To go along with it, he takes off points because Ford Field has a roof. Here's his explanation:

"The Motor City may have its problems, but sports aesthetics isn't one of them (well, except for the Lions, who really need to ditch all the black trim, go back to a conventional number font and get rid of Ford Field's roof). If a crazy quilt of rotating designs is your thing, then Motown isn't the place for you -- the Tigers, Lions and Red Wings currently have zero alternate uniforms among them. But it will do you just fine if you're in the market for a solid-looking sports town."

"UNI WATCH SCORE: Tigers: 9, Lions: 3, Pistons: 6.5, Red Wings: 9, Intangibles: Minus points for Ford Field's dome (-2). Bonus point for the fist of Joe Louis, arguably the world's coolest sports sculpture (1). UNI: 6.63"

Sure, the Wings, Lions and Tigers don't have any alternates, but the Pistons have alternate "Motor City" jerseys that they've worn for the past two seasons and have been rumored to be introducing a new grey alternate look.

Here's the rest of the top 10 on Lukus' list:

  1. Boston
  2. Pittsburgh
  3. Chicago
  4. Philadelphia
  5. San Fransisco/Bay Area
  6. New York
  7. Toronto
  8. Detroit
  9. Dallas
  10. St. Louis
