Shane Greene To Have Surgery Thursday; Out For Season

Tigers' right-handed pitcher Shane Greene is out for the season after being diagnosed with a pseudoaneurysm in the circumflex artery of his shoulder. He will have surgery on Thursday, but is projected to be ready for spring training.

According to Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand, Greene will be ready for stretching and strengthening work in 10 days to two weeks, and will be cleared to begin throwing again in two months.

"The artery was trying to clot, and what happened was the muscles contracted and forced the clot down," Rand said. "That's where the issue was."

Greene debuted in the major leagues in April of last year for the Yankees, and has a career 5.38 ERA in 30 starts between New York and Detroit. For the Tigers, Greene accumulated a 4-8 record in 16 starts, allowing 103 hits and 13 home runs and striking out 50.

In Greene's last seven games, he had an 11.35 ERA and had allowed 42 hits in 23 innings pitched.

"I can't say if it did or didn't but it certainly makes me think there might have been a relation or some kind of correlation between the two," Ausmus said about the possibility that Greene had struggled recently because of his health.

As far as other Tigers pitchers go, Ausmus said there was nothing new to report on either Anibal Sanchez or Daniel Norris, who are both on the disabled list.
