Well-Known Party Store Near Kensington Metro Park Goes Up In Flames

MILFORD (WWJ) - A well-known party store near Kensington Metro Park went up in flames Wednesday morning, completely destroying the building.

The fire took off early at Holden's Party Store and Deli on South Milford Road, between Buno and Dawson roads in Milford.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the fire, which quickly consumed the building. Investigators say the fire started in the kitchen area of the store.

The owner, Peter Holden, was working inside the building when the fire took off.

"I was here when it went," Holden told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "It was a fryer that failed and I don't know what happened to the fryer but it got so bad I couldn't contain it myself and we called the fire department right away."

Authorities say the building is a total loss. No injuries were reported.

Holden, who employs about two dozen full- and part-time workers,  said he feels lost at the moment but there's not much he can do.

"I don't know what to say. What can I say? I mean, you have to take the next step so it's just another challenge for me to get through," he said.

Crews from Wixom, Novi, Highland Township, Commerce Township, Lyon Township and White Lake fire departments are assisting Milford firefighters at the scene.

The fire remains under investigation.
