Woman Facing Drunk Boating Charge After Hitting Man With Jet Ski

WEST BLOOMFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - A Royal Oak woman is facing drunk boating charges after her jet ski hit a man in Middle Straits Lake.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office says the incident happened around 4:20 p.m. Sunday near the private West Acres Beach in West Bloomfield Township.

A 24-year-old woman was riding a jet ski when she stood up, lost control and drove into the swimming area of the beach, according to police. The jet ski struck a 60-year-old man who had been standing in the water, "sandwiching" him between the Jet-ski and a pontoon boat, according to police.

The jet ski continued to strike the side of the pontoon boat until other bystanders intervened, police said.

The man was transported to Huron Valley Hospital where he remains in stable condition. His injuries aren't life threatening, but police say he is being treated for multiple broken bones.

No other injuries were reported.

The woman appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, police said, and was taken into custody for operating while intoxicated causing injury and operating without a boater's safety certificate.

The incident remains under investigation.
