Mayor Credits County Cops, Vigilant Residents After Rochester Hills Rated Safest Michigan City

ROCHESTER HILLS (WWJ) - Rochester Hills has been deemed the safest urbanized city in Michigan by an Auburn Hills-based data service — and the mayor calls it "a wonderful accomplishment."

Munetrix Municipal Metrics considered all types of crime on a per capita basis, looking at communities with a population over 50,000. The report was released Friday.

"The city of Rochester Hills has been on a roll lately," said Mayor Brian Barnett. "(We were rated) one of the top ten places to live in the country, and of course this is probably the best recognition you can receive: being the safest city in your state."

Barnet told WWJ's Chrystal Knight this is the result of a team effort.

"...We share it with the members of our Oakland County Sheriff's Office that patrol and keep us safe, as well as the many residents that are vigilant," Barnet said.

The study showed that Rochester Hills which has 75,000 residents, had a per capita crime score of 2.47 percent.

"It was interesting to note that the study, while also naming the city of Rochester Hills the safest city, it also says we pay the least for those services," Barnet added. "So we do the most cost-effective job of any of our comparable cities."
