Michigan Could See Influx Of Syrian Refugees As US Makes Plans

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Michigan could see an influx of Syrian refugees as the United States makes plans to accept 10,000 Syrian refugees.

Federal figures say the Detroit, Dearborn and Warren areas are home to several thousand Syrian immigrants -- the fourth-largest population in the U.S.

Dave Murray, a spokesman for Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, says Michigan is "open to working with the federal government to see if there is a role that Michigan can play with this issue."

The federal government says refugees, if possible, are placed near family or friends they identify.

The White House on Thursday discussed plans for the U.S. to accept more Syrian refugees in the coming budget year, a significant increase.
