Rosh Hashanah Brings Celebration Of Jewish New Year Highlighted With River Walk Event

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Jewish high holiday season begins Sunday evening with Rosh Hashanah; the Jewish New Year is meant to be a time of intense introspection.

Rabbi Dan Horowitz of Temple Israel and "The Well" a Jewish youth organization spoke to WWJ about a special Rosh Hashanah event planned for Tuesday along the Detroit River.

"Hundreds upon hundreds of folks from the metro Detroit Jewish community casting away those short-comings in the form of breadcrumbs into the Detroit River from the River Walk, which hopefully would be a special community bonding experience," said Horowitz.

He says the ritual is especially meaningful because "it's not inherently dogmatic: it doesn't matter if you believe in God or not, it doesn't (matter) if you are traditionally observant or not ..."

Traditionally, at this time of year, Jews ask forgiveness of those they have wronged on a person-to-person level.

"It's one of four Jewish New Years, if you will, but it's when the year actually turns over, so on the Hebrew calendar we are now moving from the year 5775 into the year 5776," said Horowitz.

Tuesday's event begins at 5:30 p.m. in Hart Plaza.
