Man's Leg Nearly Severed In Explosion During Target Practice
GRANT TOWNSHIP (AP/WWJ) - Authorities say a man's leg was nearly severed when he and his friends shot at a metal barrel during target practice in western Michigan.
The Ludington Daily News and The Muskegon Chronicle report the sheriff's department responded Sunday afternoon following the explosion on private property in the area of Morton and Modjeski roads in Mason County's Grant Township.
The department said the men were firing a rifle at the 55 gallon barrel, containing two pounds of Tannerite, when it exploded sending jagged shards of metal flying.
One piece traveled about 150 feet, officials said, striking 49-year-old man who partially seated behind a tree with his leg exposed. "A piece of debris nearly severed the victim's leg," according to the sheriff's office report.
The man's injuries were described as serious.
His name was not released.
