Ex-Detroit Cop Gets Probation In Gunpoint Cellphone Confrontation
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A former Detroit police officer is on probation until next June for his role in a confrontation with three men over the theft of a cellphone belonging to the daughter of a St. Clair Shores police sergeant.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says David Pomeroy was sentenced Thursday for failing to uphold or enforce the law, a misdemeanor.
Authorities have said Michael Notoriano's then-16-year-old daughter was robbed two years ago at a Detroit gas station after being thrown to the ground.
Prosecutors say Notoriano and then-Detroit police Sgt. David Pomeroy traced the phone to Detroit, where they confronted three other men at gunpoint the next day. That's when Pomeroy allegedly took a handgun and the phone and Notoriano took $300 and marijuana before striking one of the men with a gun.
A jury failed to reach a verdict in Notoriano's robbery trial in February and a mistrial was declared. Another jury trial is scheduled to start in January.
