Mom, Boyfriend Charged In Death Of 18-Month-Old Boy

MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ ) - Murder and manslaughter charges have been filed against a Clinton Township couple in the death of a little boy.

The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office says William Warren III abused his girlfriend's 18-month-old Amere Carver so badly, he died two days after arriving at the hospital with head and other injuries. The boy is Brandee Wright's son from a previous relationship.

Warren, 23, is charged with felony murder and first-degree child abuse --  both charges punishable by up to life in prison.

Wright, 22, is charged with involuntary manslaughter, a 15-year felony; second-degree child abuse, a 10-year felony; and lying to a peace officer, a four-year felony.

Both remain in custody and are expected to appear before a judge later Friday.

Officials say the boy suffered severe injuries on August 11 while in Warren's care. Police allege that when Wright returned to their Clinton Township residence and found the child limp and unresponsive, she asked another roommate to help cover up the incident by lying about who had been watching Amere at the time.

When Amere was admitted to McLaren Hospital, doctors found a severe burn to one of his fingers. Police also believe that two weeks prior to the fatal event, a pediatrician saw bruising to Amere's face, arms and genital area.

Amere died on August 13, two days after the final incident.

"The care of our children is our most sacred responsibility," Prosecutor Eric Smith said in a statement. "These adults have to answer for this infant's needless death."
