Historic Ma Deeter's Burns To The Ground In Oscoda County

OSCODA (CBS Detroit) It's an iconic spot for Michigan vacationers who head into the wild to enjoy the state's lush beauty.

And now it's gone.

Ma Deeter's burned down early this morning, with some hardy old wood timbers and the stone chimney as the only things left standing.

No one was hurt in the blaze, that reportedly started near the kitchen. It was spotted at about 2:30 a.m. when the restaurant and bar was closed.

Reaction was strong, and immediate.
Facebook fan Autumn Meyer Zumiga echoed the sentiments of many she she wrote, "Oh No!! This is so sad.... So many memories made here!!"

According to its website, Ma Deeters has been operating since 1921. The original was torn down and rebuilt on November 3, 1941, and is the "largest commercial log cabin building East of the Mississippi."

"Everyone seems to have a story to tell about Ma Deeters. The original owners Anna (Ma Deeter) and William Deeter ran the restaurant and bar until 1941, when Anna's husband passed away. When Anna and William owned Ma Deeters, they also rented out rooms above the bar. To this day legend has it that the rooms are still haunted by Ma Deeter," the restaurant's Website says.

And many aren't willing to let it go. Facebook fan Ryan Stajkowski wrote this:
"Let's see if the new owners are as invested in "Deeter's" as we all were.....REBUILD..!!!!!!
