Coast Guard Suspends Lake Michigan Search For 2 Missing Men
WYOMING, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended a search for two men reported overdue from a fishing trip on Lake Michigan.
Coast Guard Capt. Amy Cocanour says the decision to stop actively looking for Christopher Patterson and Aaron Juarez was made late Thursday after 23 searches that covered nearly 3,800 nautical square miles.
Cocanour described search conditions as excellent. She says the two men took to water Saturday morning from the Pigeon Lake boat launch in western Michigan's Port Sheldon.
Family members told authorities that the men had not been heard from since late Friday. A SUV and empty boat trailer belonging to one of the men were found Wednesday in a boat launch parking lot near Pigeon Lake in Olive Township, just west of Grand Rapids. Cell phone records also show that one of their phones was near the boat launch about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
The Ottawa County sheriff's office has said the men were roommates in Wyoming, west of Grand Rapids.
