Man Falls From Tree Stand, Dies On Opening Day Of Bow Hunting Season

HURON COUNTY (WWJ) - Authorities say a 45-year-old Ohio man died after falling from a tree stand in Michigan's thumb region on the opening day of bow-hunting season.

The Department of Natural Resources says conservation officers responded to the Verona State Game Area around 10 a.m. Thursday after receiving a call made by the victim's hunting partner.

Officers along with personnel from Central Huron Ambulance in Bad Axe found the man laying at the base of a tree and attempted to perform CPR, but there was nothing they could do. The man was declared dead at the scene.

According to the DNR, preliminary investigation revealed that the man had shot a deer and had unfastened his safety harness to climb down from his tree stand when he fell. It happened on the opening day of Michigan's archery deer hunting season.

Officials say the incident remains under investigation. The cause of death is pending conclusive determination by the Huron County medical examiner. The man's name has not yet been released.

The roughly 7,700-acre Verona State Game Area is located about six miles east of Bad Axe.
