Monica Conyers Files For Divorce From U.S. Congressman John Conyers

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) -- Former Detroit City Council member Monica Conyers has started the process of officially separating from her husband, U.S. Congressman John Conyers.

According to court documents obtained by WWJ, Conyers filed for divorce on Sept. 3 in Wayne County Circuit Court, claiming "a breakdown of the marriage relationship to the extent that the objects of matrimony have been destroyed and there remains no reasonable likelihood that the marriage can be preserved."

The two had been married for 25 years.

John Conyers is reportedly not going to contest the divorce. In a response filed in court, he agreed that the marriage has been "broken down beyond repair, and wants the marriage to end also."

in 2009, Monica Conyers admitted taking bribes from Houston-based Synagro Technologies in exchange for her vote on a $47 million sludge hauling contract.

She entered prison in 2010 after pleading guilty in 2009 to taking bribes while on the Detroit council. She was released in late December 2012 after serving 27 months at Alderson Federal Prison Camp, often referred to as "Camp Cupcake."

A month later she was released to a Detroit halfway house, taking a job with an auto body shop where here manager told WWJ Newsradio 950 she was working hard and humble in her role, filling out paperwork and answering phones.
