Detroit Mayor Going Door-To-Door To Recruit Angels' Night Volunteers

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The city of Detroit is seeking volunteers to help protect neighborhoods from arsonists by being vigilant over the Halloween period.

Mayor Mike Duggan, his appointees and community leaders will go door-to-door Saturday morning making pitches for residents to join the Angels' Night campaign.

The city kicked off the annual initiative Friday.

Angels' Night has been credited with reducing the number of intentionally set fires at the end of October.

It's a long-running response to what was known as Devil's Night, the day before Halloween. In 1984, Detroit had more than 800 fires during the period.

City officials reported 97 fires over the 3-day period in 2014. Fewer than half were deemed suspicious. It was the fourth year in a row with fewer than 100 fires.
