Buffalo's 'Industrial Cathedrals' Slowly Finding New Life

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A worn-looking collection of grain silos left over from Buffalo's heyday as a shipping hub are being re-awakened as places to eat, drink and play for a public eager to touch the city's past.

Rick Smith's "Silo City" elevators and grounds have been the setting for theater productions, outdoor concerts, foot races, literary readings and art installations.

Nearby, the sprawling RiverWorks complex is the site of roller derby, 500-seat restaurant and ice hockey. Developer Doug Swift envisions a climbing gym, ropes course and zip-lining.

Next month, one of the elevators will become a projection screen for a year-round light show.
