Deputies Making Drunk Driving Arrest Sideswiped By Second Drunk Driver [VIDEO]

MACOMB TWP. (WWJ) - A pair of Macomb County Sheriff's deputies were pulled over making a drunken driving arrest when their patrol cars were sideswiped by another drunk driver.

The incident, captured on dash cam video, happened early Saturday morning along Romeo Plank near 22 Mile Road in Macomb Township.

Sheriff Anthony Wickersham says dispatchers, at 12:30 a.m., had put out a BOL (be on the lookout) for a possible drunk driver in a blue Ford Mustang, heading southbound on Romeo Plank from 26 Mile Rd.

A deputy spotted the suspect, made a traffic stop, and a second deputy arrived to assist, and the driver — a 20-year-old Sterling Heights man — was arrested.

While he was sitting in the back seat of the patrol vehicle talking with the deputies, Wickersham said, a second intoxicated driver sped by in a Mercury Mountaineer, sideswiping the two Sheriff's cars before slamming in to the Mustang, pushing it into a ditch.

The Mountaineer came to rest in a ditch and the driver, a 20-year-old Macomb Township man, was arrested.

Wickersham said both underage drinkers were taken to the Macomb County Jail where they were given breathalyzer tests. Each had an identical blood alcohol content (BAC) of .17 percent.

No one was hurt, but Wickersham said one of the patrol cars that was struck had to be taken out-of-service due to the damage.

Both drivers are charged with OWI (Operating While Intoxicated) with high BAC, first offense.

Their names have not been released.
