Novelty 'Hand Grenade' Draws Bomb Squad Response On Detroit's East Side
DETROIT (WWJ) - It wasn't a grenade -- but it sure looked like one. That's what Detroit police are saying about a "suspicious object" that sparked a response from the bomb squad.
The situation unfolded around 9 a.m. Wednesday on the city's east side after police received a tip about an object that resembled a hand grenade being found along Gratiot Avenue near Mt. Elliot Street.
Taking the situation seriously, law enforcement officials along with the bomb squad responded to the scene as the area was blocked off to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
But after checking the area and inspecting the object, it was determined that the "grenade" was actually just a novelty item and posed no threat. At that point, officials gave the all clear and reopened the area to traffic.
