Potter Park Zookeepers 'Deeply Saddened' By Loss Of Endangered Black Rhino

LANSING (CBS Detroit) - It's a difficult day for employees at the Potter Park Zoo in Lansing as they mourn the loss of a beloved resident.

The zoo announced that Jello, a 12-year-old Eastern black rhino, was euthanized Monday morning "for humane reasons" after he suddenly became critically ill.

In a media release out Tuesday, zoo officials said Jello suffered from a seizure disorder and that complications from his ongoing neurological condition are likely to blame for his sudden decline.

"The loss of Jello is a devastating blow to the zoo, to our community, and to this critically endangered species," said Potter Park Zoo Director Sherrie Graham, in a statement.  "We are deeply saddened by the loss of an animal who interacted with thousands of zoo visitors, and provided them with the opportunity to observe a species they otherwise might never see."

Jello was already considered a "special needs" rhino when he came to Potter Park from Zoo Miami at age 7 — back in 2011 —and was later diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy.

Dr. Sally Nofs, Potter Park Zoo's Director of Animal Health, explained Jello had to be specially trained to allow zookeepers to give him his medicine daily and often draw blood for tests — a treatment that kept his seizures under control for several years.

"Jello's keepers should be commended for their determination to help him maintain a good quality of life as he required such special care," said Nofs. "The reason he lived as long as he did is due to their dedication."

Eastern black rhinos are critically endangered, with only 5,000 living in the wild.

Potter Park remains home to an 8-year-old female black rhino, Doppsee. Eastern black rhinos are critically endangered, with only 5,000 living in the wild.

"Inspired by Jello's life and gentle spirit, we will continue our efforts to preserve the Eastern black rhino," said Graham.

Grief counselors will be available to support Potter Park Zoo's team.
