Woman Carrying Weapon Arrested At Detroit Metro Airport

DETROIT (WWJ) - An Ohio woman has been arrested for carrying a concealed weapon into Detroit Metro Airport. Spokesman Mike Conway says the woman was caught at the passenger screening checkpoint at the North Terminal early Wednesday morning.

"Airport police arrested at 34-year-old resident of Lima, Ohio for carrying a concealed weapon," said Conway. "She was basically discovered by security administration screeners at one of the passenger screening check-points at the North Terminal."

It is legal to travel with weapons says Conway as long as they are packaged correctly and in checked bags.

"When it's in checked luggage, you as a passenger don't have access to it during the flight," Conway adds.

"In her case, she had a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon, and this was loaded," said Conway. "But you can't - even with a permit - you can not carry a weapon - anything that's dangerous that could be used as a weapon, and a loaded gun definitely qualifies -- onto an airplane."

The woman has since been released and awaits word from the prosecutor's office about charges.

There have been 23 incidents so far this year involving passengers bringing handguns through screening checkpoints. Last year, there was a total of 32.
