Walmart Hiring For The Holidays As More Black Friday News Leaks, Including Free Shipping

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) It's a retail institution that has gotten a bad rap where employee pay and treatment is concerned, but Walmart says it's hiring a substantial number of new employees for this holiday season.

And the pay will be competitive.

The retail giant announced it will hire 1,400 workers for the upcoming holiday season at 94 stores in Michigan.

The jobs are for cashiers, sales associates and stockers.

The starting salaries are at least $9 an hour, staffers say.

The best news for job seekers? Executives say many of those hired as seasonal help continued to work as full-time employees.

This comes as the first Black Friday ads start to leak from other retail giants and an expert says shoppers should expect to find deeper discounts than ever before on the biggest shopping day of the year.

There should be a laptop on sale somewhere for $94.99, a 32″ HDTV for $70, a 40″ HDTV for $110, a 50″ TV for $175,  said Phil Dengler of BestBlackFriday.com

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 bundles will also see new lows, he said.

"We fully expect the PlayStation 4 to get a similar $299.99 price point announcement in the coming days," he said.

Tablets from non-premium brands will start at $5 after a deep rebate.

As for the digital world, he said he expects online shopping to continue to increase, and for sales to reach $1.5 billion online on Thanksgiving.

"Total (online and offline) Black Friday sales will fall a bit, but it is only because Thanksgiving is eating into it. Combined Black Friday and Thanksgiving sales will be up from 2014," Dengler predicted.

Best Buy announced it will offer free shipping on every single order during the holiday season, regardless of the order amount. Other retailers, including Walmart and Target, are expected to follow suit.
