Daylight Saving Time Comes To End This Weekend

DETROIT (WWJ) - Clocks go back an hour at 2 a.m. this Sunday, meaning an extra hour of sleep as Daylight Saving Time comes to an end.

But why do we change the clocks anyway? Wayne State Economics Professor Alan Goodman says Daying Savings was started by Germany to conserve coal during World War 1.

But he says that today, there really are no energy savings.

"Most of the studies that look at the costs find that at best it doesn't seem to save much and I saw the Indiana study and it's a pretty well done study, and you certainly aren't saving much and it may be costing a little bit," said Goodman.

Goodman says Daylight Saving Time persists because many people and businesses like an extra hour of daylight during summer nights for leisure activities.

"Rather than the sun coming up at five in the morning and going down at eight at night -- wouldn't it be nice if we are running a business or if we are playing tennis or if we are doing anything else if we were able to have an hour of sunshine and later rather than earlier?" notes Goodman.
