Flint Police Chief Apologizes For Use Of Handcuffs On Child

FLINT, Mich. (AP) - The Flint police chief says he's apologized to the mother of a student who was handcuffed during an after-school program.

The incident occurred Oct. 12, nearly three weeks ago, at Brownell STEM Academy. In a statement, Chief James Tolbert said Friday that an officer used handcuffs "to restrain the child to prevent injury to the child or others."

Tolbert says the incident doesn't help build trust between kids and police. He says results of the investigation will be released.

The statement doesn't offer many details about what happened, although Tolbert says police were called because the child was a threat to himself and others.

A message seeking additional information from a Flint spokesman wasn't immediately returned.
