Five, Including Three Firefighters, Injured In Detroit Apartment Blaze

DETROIT (WWJ) Five people, including three firefighters, were injured in a fire at a Detroit apartment building that seemed to initially rage out of control Tuesday afternoon.

"There were three firefighters transported, the first firefighter was transported - he had second and third degree burns to his face and neck and two other firefighters were transported for assessment," said Fire Chief Charles Sims. "Two civilians were transported to the hospital -- one lady suffered burns to her face and neck area and the second was treated for possible smoke inhalation."

The fire at Grayton Park Apartments began in one unit around 3 p.m. and quickly spread to the roof, and eventually gutting the entire 48 unit building.

Warren Flowers and his wife have been left homeless by the fire and told WWJ's Sandra McNeill, "you never think life will happen to you."

"Me and my wife lost everything ... it was my day off and I was just relaxing and I heard glass shattering like someone was busting bottles and then I heard the detectors going off -- the next thing I know there is just smoke all around, in the hallways. I just panicked and got out of there," Flowers said.

It's not yet determined what sparked the blaze at Outer Drive and Schoolcraft.

Firefighters continued to battle the blaze well into the afternoon.
