Plans Move Forward For Bike-Sharing Program In Detroit

DETROIT (AP) - Plans are moving forward for a bike-sharing program in Detroit that's expected to launch next year.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Henry Ford Health System/Health Alliance Plan has pledged a three-year commitment to the program.

Brenda Craig, spokeswoman for Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System, says it's "a tangible way of improving the health and wellness of the community." The newspaper says officials declined to say how much money the commitment represents.

Lisa Nuszkowski, executive director of Detroit Bike Share for the Downtown Detroit Partnership, says the program is expected to cost about $2 million to launch and $1 million annually to operate. It's expected to start with 350 bicycles at 35 stations.

Nuszkowski earlier said more than $2 million had already been raised.
