Child Fatally Struck By Car While Riding Bike In Warren

WARREN (WWJ) - A young teenager who was running errands for his family was fatally struck by a vehicle while riding his bike across the road in Warren.

The accident happened Wednesday evening along 9 Mile Road near Weller Avenue, just east of Schoenherr Road.

The victim, a 13- or 14-year-old boy, was riding his bike across the street when he was struck by a Camaro driven by a man in his mid-20s. He was declared dead at the scene.

The driver stopped at the scene and reportedly told police that the boy crossed right in front of him and there was nothing he could do to stop in time.

A manager at the Shopper's Market grocery store nearby told WWJ's Ron Dewey that the boy had been running errands for his family and was trying to make a purchase at the store when he realized he either lost or had forgotten his Bridge Card. The man said the boy used a store phone to call his mother, who told him to come home and get some cash. The boy went home, came back to the store, finished shopping and then left, after which he was struck by the car.

Shortly thereafter, the manager said the boy's mother called the store wondering if he had left yet. That's when he asked an officer at the scene to speak to the mother and deliver the tragic news.

The incident remains under investigation. Police are expected to release more information on the case later Thursday.
