Shuttered Theater On Detroit's East Side To Be Demolished

DETROIT (AP) - A former movie theater that became a well-known music venue on Detroit's east side is expected to be torn down.

A $288,000 contract has been awarded to demolish the Eastown Theatre, which was heavily damaged by fire and people seeking scrap metal.

MLive reports "the once-legendary rock venue"  hosted acts from Alice Cooper, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead to Muddy Waters, Elton John and B.B. King.

The movie theater was converted into a music venue in the 1960s. It later was used as an adult movie theater, a performing arts center and a church.

The building has been vacant for several years.
