Caldwell On Job Security: 'Why Even Talk About It?'

Jim Caldwell has been spunkier than normal during his recent press conferences, making more jokes and having a little more back-and-forth with reporters. Winning can do that, and the Lions are doing so, finally, after pulling off two straight victories against Green Bay and Oakland.

But the one topic Caldwell doesn't want to touch with a 10-foot poll is his job status.

Ever since the Lions fired team president Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew, Caldwell's future with the franchise has been in question. Team owner Martha Firestone Ford hired Rod Wood as the organization's new president last week, and he said Caldwell's status would be up to the future GM.

Often, new general managers like to bring in their own people and make their own coaching hires, instead of sticking to what the franchise previously had. But it's also possible Caldwell could stay, especially if current interim GM, Sheldon White, is hired as Mayhew's permanent replacement. Wood said White would be a sure candidate for the position.

Regardless of how the front office shakes out, Caldwell isn't worried.

"You must be fixated on that or something aren't you?" he said when a reporter began asking a question about Caldwell's job status on Monday. "I don't think about it as much as you do, seriously. Why even talk about it? What sense does it make? You write what you want to write in that regard. I don't think about it seriously. I don't talk about it. We do what we do. This is kind of the business that we've chosen and what happens happens."

There have been no indications given from the front office about which side of the fence they're leaning on with regards to Caldwell. Ford has not been available for comment about anything, much less about Caldwell's future with the organization.

Caldwell went 11-5 in his first season with Detroit last year, and the Lions are 3-7 now after their win against Oakland.
