Masked Robbers Hold Up Dearborn Coney Island, Shoot Employee

DEARBORN (WWJ) - Police say two masked robbers are on the run after an early morning shooting at a coney island restaurant in Dearborn.

The incident happened around 4:15 a.m. Tuesday at Dearborn Coney Island on Telegraph Road, between Michigan Avenue and Annapolis Street.

John Vasha, whose family owns the restaurant, said the suspects were apparently on a mission for money.

"They came in through the back door and they were looking for the money and after that, they never found nothing and probably that upset them and they just shot at random," Vasha told WWJ's Charlie Langton.

According to police, an employee was completing some repair work on the restaurant's back door when he was approached by two men wearing masks and armed with guns, who forced him back inside the business and demanded money.

As the employee was trying to open the cash register, one of the suspects opened fire, striking the employee in the leg. Both suspects then fled the scene in an unknown direction.

The employee suffered minor injuries are was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Police are now reviewing security video to get a description of the suspects. Police Chief Ron Haddad said they are "aggressively" investigating the crime and will "utilize all available resources to identify the suspects."

Long-time customer Jeff Oliver said he couldn't believe what happened at the restaurant.

"I come here every morning before I go to work and have a coffee and a breakfast muffin and go to work," he said. "I hope everything is going to be OK."

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 313-943-2240.
