Man Will Go To Trial For Attack On EMTs, Teen's 2006 Slaying
DETROIT (AP) — One of two Detroit emergency medical technicians repeatedly stabbed with a box cutter on a city street in October testified Monday that she tried to fight off her attacker with a stool.
Wearing protection around her jaw, Kelly Adams described in court how she and Alfredo Rojas struggled to survive while on a midnight run to help a woman with a sprained ankle on Oct. 20.
It was enough to persuade Judge Lydia Nance Adams to order Michael Montgomery, 30, to trial on attempted murder charges.
Adams said Montgomery attacked her and EMT Alfredo Rojas after they refused to allow him to ride in the ambulance.
"I had arteries cut in my face" and Rojas "had arteries cut in his hand," said Adams, who has partial paralysis in her face.
She said she struck Montgomery with a stool but "it was like I didn't faze him."
Coincidentally, police were looking for Montgomery that day after DNA linked him to the sexual assault and slaying of a 16-year-old girl in 2006. The judge heard testimony in that case and ordered him to trial, although defense attorney Wyatt Harris insisted there's not enough evidence.
Separately, Montgomery is charged with sexually assaulting a woman in 2005.
