Hundreds Of Detroit Cops Take Part In Fitness Challenge

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit police are not waiting until the new year to get healthy, they've started their journey Tuesday.

Detroit Police Officer Elaine Williams joined more than 200 co-workers to get screened for things such as cholesterol, blood sugar and weight reports WWJ Health Reporter Dr. Deanna Lites.

"I definitely need to lose 15 -20 pounds," said Williams.

That's why Williams is taking part in a 90-Day Fit Challenge. A partnership between the Detroit Police Department and the Detroit Medical Center to help officers get healthy.

"When you are fit, you think clearly - you respond differently and you have the a much higher level of confidence," said Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

The hope is that after 90 days the officers will continue with the program for a year.

One way to keep it interesting, they plan on engaging in a bit of friendly competition with different precincts to see who can be the healthiest in Detroit.
Greg?

Do they have to do the challenge?

No, it's voluntary says Craig. The department used to have fitness requirements for all of their officers, but that's no longer the case.

There were a lot of officers at the kick off so that's encouraging he notes.

Studies show that when we're eating healthy, getting regular exercise and at an ideal weight we not only feel better, but function better in every part of our life.
