Police Search For Hit-And-Run Driver In Deadly Pedestrian Crash

CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) - Police say a man was killed when he was struck by two vehicles on a busy Macomb County road, one of which fled the scene after the fatal accident.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. Thursday on Garfield Road just south of Terra Bella Street, between 17 Mile and 18 Mile roads in Clinton Township.

Police say the 38-year-old Clinton Township man was crossing the road when he was first struck by a northbound traveling vehicle whose driver kept going after the collision. The man was then struck again by a second driver who stopped at the scene and called police. A third vehicle also stopped at the scene and blocked the roadway before police arrived.

The man was declared dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released.

Lt. Tony Greene said at this point, it's hard to tell which vehicle delivered the fatal hit.

"He sustained some serious injuries," Greene told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "I don't know if the injuries are the result of the first vehicle or the second vehicle."

Dense pockets of fog were reported across the region Thursday morning, but Greene said there were no visibility issues at the time and fog does not appear to be a factor.

"It was relatively clear, just a damp, chilly night," he said.

Police are now searching for the first driver who fled the scene. The vehicle is unknown, but is expected to have front-end damage. Parts from the vehicle were left behind at the scene, and investigators will be using those to determine the type of car involved in the accident.

"Everything that we've recovered from the initial vehicle, we'll take that back to the station and put that back together and I'll be hitting the dealerships first thing," said Greene.

Anyone who might have witnessed the crash or who has other information is urged to contact police at 586-493-7800.

Garfield Road was closed for nearly four hours as police investigated the scene, but has since reopened.
