Bravo Brand Dog & Cat Food Recalled After Test Finds Salmonella
DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - Bravo Pet Foods is recalling four of its products due the possible presence of Salmonella.
The Manchester, Connecticut-based company says a select lot of Bravo Chicken Blend diet for dogs & cats, with a best used by date of 11/13/16, tested positive for Salmonella. Three other products, produced on the same day, are being recalled "out of an abundance of caution." (Scroll down for details).
These products were sold to distributors, retail stores, internet retailers, and directly to consumers in the U.S. between 11/21/14 and 1/15/15.
Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products, Bravo says.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection in humans include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.
So far, illnesses associated with these products have been reported to Bravo. Anyone whose pets have eaten the recalled food and exhibit any symptoms is urged to call a veterinarian, and anyone who handled the recalled food and feels ill should call a doctor.

The recalled product should not be sold or fed to pets. Pet owners who have the affected product at home should dispose of this product in a safe manner (example: a securely covered trash receptacle).
