Company Installs Wi-Fi, Video Doorbells On About 200 Detroit Homes
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A Los Angeles-based tech and security company has installed Wi-Fi and video enabled doorbells at about 200 homes in various Detroit neighborhoods.
An agreement between the city of Detroit and a company called Ring initially called for 200 devices, but it could eventually reach around 500 devices. Ring's director of operations told MLive.com that the goal of the devices is simply to reduce crime in communities.
The device, which costs $199, features a 180-degree fisheye lens and connects to the home's Wi-Fi, allowing the homeowner use their smartphone to see and speak to anyone who rings their doorbell. It also has motion detection and can upload recorded video to cloud storage.
Ring developers also are testing on-demand live streaming so homeowners can check on their block at any time.
