Medical Examiner: Man Killed By Dearborn Cop Shot Multiple Times, Death Ruled Homicide

DEARBORN (WWJ) - A man who was killed during a struggle with a police officer was shot multiple times, according to the medical examiner, and his death has been ruled a homicide.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office made the determination Friday in the death of 35-year old Kevin Matthews.

Matthews, who was unarmed, was shot and killed Wednesday during a "physical altercation" with the Dearborn Police officer, who has not yet been named.

Authorities say Matthews was wanted on a misdemeanor probation violation in Redford, and also for a theft in Dearborn. The officer spotted Matthews in the area of Tireman and Greenfield, at the Detroit-Dearborn border, and a foot chase ensued, according to police.

The officer followed Matthews into a backyard of a home in the 8000 block of Whitcomb Ave. where a "physical altercation" ensued, police said, during which the officer fired shots. Matthews died at the scene.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig told reporters that the officer's uniform was torn during the struggle and equipment was pulled off his belt. Dearborn Police Chief Ron Haddad declined to talk about the officer, who has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Matthews' family has said he suffered from paranoid schizophrenia but he wasn't a violent person.

An investigation is ongoing.
