Macomb Township Man Accused Of Strangling Elderly Dad

MOUNT CLEMENTS (WWJ) - An 89-year-old Macomb Township man is dead after his son allegedly strangled him.

Gregory Nieman, 55, has been charged with murder in the death of his father, Donald Nieman, at the condo they shared on Warwick Drive.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said the 911 call came in from the victim's son who was the older man's primary caregiver.

"We were called to the house and the victim was unresponsive and cold to the touch," Wickersham said.

"The initial look at body was somewhat suspicious, but we really didn't have anything until the medical examiner did the autopsy," the sheriff said. "Upon further investigation, the medical examiner's office determined that the cause of death was a homicide."

Wickersham said investigators have not determined a motive at this time. Previous welfare checks, he said, didn't reveal any issues at the home, with deputies reporting that the elderly man was being "well taken care of."

Gregory Neiman was ordered held without bond at an arraignment Tuesday. He is due back in court next week.
