Police: 12, 13-Year-Old Stepbrothers Caught Shoplifting On Christmas Eve

TROY (WWJ) - While many people were doing their last-minute shopping on Christmas Eve, police say two young step-brothers were doing some Christmas stealing.

Police say the 12- and 13-year-old step-brothers from Madison Heights, along with a 21-year-old man, were arrested at the Kohl's store in Troy on Christmas Eve for trying to steal more than $600 worth of merchandise.

Police say they responded to the store, located along John R just north of 14 Mile, around 3 p.m. after being contacted by loss prevention officers who apparently caught the trio red-handed.

According to police, the adult suspect attempted to steal $209.99 worth of merchandise, the 13-year-old attempted to steal $180 worth of merchandise, and the younger boy attempted to steal $241.99 worth of merchandise.

The man was cited for second-degree retail fraud, a misdemeanor, before being released. Both boys were also cited for second-degree retail fraud and were released to their step-parent, who police said agreed to bring them to juvenile court at a later date.
