2 In Custody, Others Still At Large In ATM Smash-And-Grab

CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - A group of thieves used a stolen SUV to smash their way into a Macomb County gas station with one thing in their sights, the ATM, but not all of the suspects were able to escape police.

The situation unfolded early Wednesday morning at the Marathon gas station on Jefferson Avenue and Cotton Road in Chesterfield Township, just north of Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

Police say the suspects drove an SUV that was stolen out of Clinton Township through the gas station storefront and dislodged the ATM, which was bolted to the ground. After getting the cash machine, the crooks fled the scene.

Macomb County Sheriff's deputies later stopped a car that was tailing the stolen SUV on I-94 near 8 Mile Road. Two suspects were apprehended but the SUV got away. Those suspects are now being interviewed as police review surveillance video to get a better picture of exactly what happened.

It's unclear how many suspects are still being sought by police.
