Funeral Held For Man Killed By Dearborn Police Officer

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A funeral has been held for a 35-year-old Detroit man killed by a Dearborn police officer.

Kevin Matthews' funeral was held Saturday at Morningview Baptist Church, more than a week after he shot multiple times in Detroit during a struggle with a suburban officer. The Rev. Charles Williams II offered the eulogy.

Police say Matthews struggled with the unidentified Dearborn officer following a foot chase from that city into a nearby Detroit backyard. Officials add Matthews was involved in an earlier larceny in Dearborn and was wanted on a misdemeanor warrant in Redford Township.

Meantime, the officer has been placed on administrative leave. Dearborn police say they are cooperating with the Detroit and state police investigation.

Williams says his group wants "justice and a fair investigation."

Matthews' mother, Valarie Johnson, says he had mental and emotional problems and needed to be comforted during periods of stress. He'd say: "Momma, don't let nobody hurt me."
