Man In Critical Condition After New Year's Day Road Rage Shooting

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police say a man is fighting for his life after being shot during an apparent road rage incident on the city's west side.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday, New Year's Day, on McNichols Road near Ward Avenue, not far from the Lodge Freeway.

According to police, a 21-year-old man driving a pick-up truck accidentally side-swiped a van.

"The victim indicated it was a complete accident," Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody told WWJ's Stephanie Davis. "He had no intention of doing it, nor did he have any knowledge of the driver in the past, he didn't know the person."

When the man slowed down to stop, the van driver pulled a gun and fired several shots at the truck.

"The victim was trying to pull over to call the police and get a report going and that sort of stuff," said Woody. "However, the van sped up and that's when he produced a weapon and began firing into the vehicle."

The 21-year-old was shot in the arm, side and leg. He is hospitalized in critical condition as police continue to search for the gunman, described only as a black male in a burgundy van.

"The van continued to flee from the scene in an unknown direction and unfortunately, we do not have much of a description of the suspect at this time," said Woody.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 313-267-4600 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
