Opponents Sue To Try To Stop Ann Arbor Deer Hunt In Parks

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Opponents have filed a lawsuit to try to stop Ann Arbor from killing up to 100 deer in parks over the next two months.

The Ann Arbor City Council has temporarily lifted an ordinance that restricts firearms in parks. The lawsuit by a group called Ann Arbor Residents for Public Safety claims that move is illegal.

Ann Arbor wants to reduce the number of deer roaming around green spaces. Officials believe the population is out of control.

Sharpshooters could start firing Monday. City attorney Stephen Postma tells The Ann Arbor News he'll review the lawsuit.

The special hunt has the approval of the state Department of Natural Resources.
