Cause A Rumpus With Wayne State's List Of Words That Deserve More Use

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A Detroit university says it wants to bring worthy words including "delectation" back from the brink.

The word meaning "pleasure and delight" is among 10 that comprise Wayne State University's annual Word Warriors list.

The school's 2016 edition of words that deserve to be used more often in conversation and prose was released Monday. It also includes "absquatulate," "anathema," "epigone," "puerile," "rumpus," "sockdolager," "sybaritic," "torpid" and "turpitude."

Word Warriors is beginning its eighth year.

Wayne State's Chris Williams says Word Warriors took entries from around the world.

"The example they gave, which I don't know if everyone will agree with it, but I thought it was pretty funny, was that the 'Monkeys' were a manufactured epigone for the Beatles," said Williams.

The list comes after Sault Ste. Marie's Lake Superior State University last week released its 41st annual List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness.

The tongue-in-cheek wish-list of sorts includes starting an answer with the word "So," "presser" instead of press conference, "problematic," "walk it back" and "break the Internet." Others are "stakeholder," "join the conversation," "physicality," "price point," "manspreading," "giving me life" and "vape," describing the act of "smoking" e-cigarettes.

There's no "secret sauce" — that rounds out this year's list — for inclusion: It's based on nominations submitted by stakeholders, er, members of the public to the Sault Ste. Marie school.

Both schools accept nominations online.
