Wreaths And Birthday Balloons At Funeral For Girl Killed By Gunfire After Christmas

DETROIT (WWJ) - Family and friends gathered Monday to pay last respects to Chanell Berry, the 7-year old girl who was killed by gunfire in her home after an argument that turned violent the Sunday after Christmas.

Wreaths and balloons were brought by family and friends to the Fellowship Chapel on the day Chanell would have celebrated her eighth birthday.

Family member Shay Carr says she will always remember what the little girl brought to her life:

"The bright smile, upbeat personality, just a joy, light the room up with her smile, very upbeat personality ... just a beautiful, happy little girl," said Carr.

"Justice for Chanell Berry, so that the mom, Keyana Johnson, my cousin can have closure, justice for her baby."

She said the family is grateful for the community's response since the little girl's death.

"Just the out-pours of everybody that didn't even know her -- as you can see -- there's tons of people here, the media, just the out-pour of a support system for her - which is what she needs, and we really, really appreciate it."

Put the guns down said Carr adding she can't make sense of the tragedy.

The 7-year-old was killed, while an 8-year-old was seriously wounded when shots were fired into their northwest Detroit home.

A woman and a man connected to a family fight earlier that day turned themselves in. They have since been released as the police investigation continues.
