Mom Complains To Pontiac School After 6-Year-Old Boy Brings Home Toy Gun
PONTIAC (WWJ/AP) - What started out as a generous project for the holidays has turned into quite a controversy after a little boy brought home a toy gun he got as a gift in school.
It happened at Herrington Elementary School in Pontiac. The school had organized for businesses to bring the students gifts around Christmas time, and Brieanna Johnson's 6-year-old son ended up getting a realistic-looking toy gun, complete with a silencer.
"This is not really a good gift to give a 6-year-old," Johnson told WXYZ-TV. She talking about the situation because she wants to make sure this doesn't happen again.
"It was a good generous thought, but it wasn't the right gift," she said.
Johnson went to the school to complain and spoke to the principal. She said he apologized and had no idea about the toy gun.
Superintendent of Pontiac Schools Kelley Williams says the district will work to improve communication with donors and have employees inspect gifts before they are handed to students.
Johnson said she doesn't allow her son to play with toy guns after the death of Tamir Rice, a Cleveland boy who was shot by police when they thought his replica gun was real.
