Lions Agree In Principle To Deal With Bob Quinn As New GM; First Task Will Be Deciding Caldwell's Fate

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The Detroit Lions have agreed to a deal in principle with Bob Quinn to be their general manager.

Lions President Rod Wood confirmed the agreement Friday night.

Quinn has been the New England Patriots' director of pro scouting.

The Lions have been looking for a GM since firing Martin Mayhew midway through the season. They promoted Sheldon White on an interim basis and he was among the candidates to get the job.

Quinn's first task will be to decide whether to retain or fire coach Jim Caldwell.

WWJ's Tony Ortiz says that "Quinn is one of the guys responsible, along with Bill Belick - and that brain-trust -- for bringing in a lot of the players that helped the Patriots continue their winning ways -- he was director of pro scouting for the last couple of years, so he's responsible for a lot of the players who have come in there. One key decision he has to make right off the bat ... is the fate of head coach Jim Caldwell. Is Caldwell going to be back for another season? Like many of the players I've talked to the last couple of weeks want or will he go in another direction."

WWJ's Russ McNamara spoke with MLive reporter Kyle Meinke to see what roads will be traveled with the new hire in charge for the off-season.

Ortiz says if Quinn decides to hire another head coach - one of the names to keep in mind is Josh McDaniels - he's the offensive coordinator of the Patriots.
