DETROIT (WWJ) – A 17-year-old girl has died from her injuries after she was beaten and raped last week as she slept in her bed at her east side Detroit home.

Detroit Police Officer Jennifer Moreno says someone climbed through a window at the family’s house, in the 5500-block of Radnor Street, and beat the girl severely in the head on Jan. 7.

The girl’s name has not been released.

Police said 19-year-old Darian Winfield, who was arrested last week for a similar beating and rape on Radnor Street the week before, is a person of the interest in the case. He’s also expected in other attacks.

Winfield remains held on a $1 million bond on sexual assault charges.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Detroit Police Special Victims Unit at 313-596-1950. Citizens can remain anonymous by sending in a tip via the DPD Connect app or contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
