Suspected Serial Rapist Charged In Grosse Pointe Park Attack

DETROIT (WWJ) - A suspected serial rapist has been charged in another attack.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's office charged 18-year-old Darian Winfield with assault with intent to murder in the stabbing of a woman who was walking in Grosse Pointe Park last month.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy said it's believed that — just after midnight on Dec. 14 — Winfield approached the victim, spoke to her briefly, and attacked her with a sharp object to her face, neck and chest, before fleeing.

The victim called 911 and was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for her injuries and released.

Winfield is already in jailed on intent to commit criminal sexual conduct, assault with intent to murder and home invasion charges after he allegedly stabbed and tried to rape a 39-year-old woman in her home on Radnor Street on Dec. 30.

Worthy believes investigators have identified the right man in these cases, and more.

"The successful prosecution of the alleged actions of this defendant will bring closure to several crimes in Wayne County," Worthy said.

Prosecutors said he's also is a person of interest in an attack on a 17-year-old girl who died Tuesday of her injuries after she was assaulted as she slept in her bed at her east side Detroit home.

According to police, someone climbed through a window at the family's house — also on Radnor Street — and raped and beat the girl severely in the head on Jan. 7. An investigation is ongoing in that case.

Winfield was arraigned in the Grosse Pointe Park attack Thursday afternoon.

Note: A Dec. 30 Detroit police report incorrectly listed Winfield's age as 19. He will turn 19 on Jan. 28.
